How to use this tool
Type or paste your text into the box. The counts update as you type, so there is no button to press.
- Words are runs of letters or digits. Hyphenated words and contractions such as “well-known” and “don’t” count once.
- Characters are shown with and without spaces, which is useful for fields that have a hard limit.
- Reading time divides the word count by the reading speed you choose. Change the speed if you are writing for a different audience.
Questions and answers
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser. The text is not sent to FBSubNet or stored, and it disappears when you close or reload the page.
Why does another counter show a slightly different number?
Tools disagree about edge cases such as hyphenated words, numbers with decimal points, and URLs. This counter treats a hyphenated word or a contraction as one word and counts a number such as 3.5 as one word.
How is reading time worked out?
The word count is divided by a reading speed in words per minute. The default of 230 is a common estimate for adults reading English silently; speaking time uses 130 words per minute. Both are estimates, so adjust the speed for your readers.
Can I use it to check a social media or SEO character limit?
Yes, use the characters count. Bear in mind that some platforms count links, emoji or accented letters differently from a plain character count.
