How to use this tool

Set a length, choose which kinds of characters to include, and select Generate password. Copy the result straight into your password manager.

Longer is stronger: each extra character multiplies the number of possible passwords. If a site rejects symbols, turn them off and add a few characters of length instead.

Questions and answers

Is the password sent to FBSubNet or saved anywhere?

No. The password is created by your browser and exists only on this page. It is not transmitted, logged or stored, and it is gone when you close or reload the page. Copying it puts it on your device’s clipboard, as with any copy.

How random are the passwords?

They use the Web Crypto API (crypto.getRandomValues), the browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator, and each character is chosen so that every option is equally likely.

What does the strength estimate mean?

It is the entropy in bits: the length multiplied by the base-2 logarithm of the number of possible characters. Each extra bit doubles the number of guesses an attacker needs on average. It applies to randomly generated passwords, not to ones a person makes up.

How should I store the password?

In a password manager, with a different password for every account. A long random password is only practical when you do not have to remember it.
